Beer, wine, and spirits, (which is often referred to as hard liquor), contain various different quantities of ethanol by weight or volume; beer and wine contain a lower dose of ethanol per ounce than hard liquor.
According to a study that was conducted by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), decades of heavy drinking (as in alcohol abuse or dependence) can destroy brain cells; this is particularly true as pertaining to in memory part of the brain, which is called the hippocampus.
The major negative effects of long-term alcohol consumption are fatty liver, gastritis, short-term memory loss, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, mild hypertension, pancreatitis, and cardiomyopathy (heart muscle degeneration).
Recent studies show that after six months, treatment for alcoholism is successful for 40 to 70% of participants.
