Alcohol abuse is a health issue that is characterized by the sufferer having a pattern of drinking excessively despite the negative effects of alcohol on the individual's work, medical, legal, educational, and/or social life.
For each year that the onset of alcohol consumption is delayed, the risk of later alcohol dependence is reduced by 14 percent.
Among high school seniors, whites are more likely and blacks least likely to drink heavily.
"Social use" of alcohol consists of an occasional drink in the company of friends: a glass of champagne at a wedding, a cold beer after a softball game, or a glass of fine wine with a meal; social drinking has not been shown to kill brain cells, nor is there any research that indicates that occasionally having an alcoholic beverage adversely affects any major body organ.
