One thousand people die from alcohol overdoses each year. Many of them are young people who drank fast to show off for their friends.
A binge drinker has a much greater risks of developing alcoholism that a social drinker; binge drinkers are also at a higher risk of alcohol poisoning that could result in death.
Alcohol has been known to increase digestion, but this may be due to its relaxing effect, when a person has a couple of drinks before a meal. In higher "doses", alcohol can cause gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), which is one of the reasons that an individual may experience heartburn and nausea the day after binge drinking; heavy drinking on a continuous basis can lead to stomach ulceration.
Facts on Tap was launched during 1998, and is an alcohol prevention initiative designed to educate and inform students about alcohol abuse and to combat binge drinking on college campuses; this government sponsored program reaches out directly to students across the country and provides awareness materials, technical assistance, and training to more than 800 colleges nationwide.
