  • Both men and women seem to be affected by alcohol's toxic neurological effects, but women often have shorter histories of heavy drinking before experiencing the same effects.
  • Many alcoholics will deny that they have a drinking problem whatsoever. Alcoholics can come up with a number of excuses to justify their drinking, i.e. blaming it on work, stress or a relationship. Their denial can be so powerful that they simply cannot see how much their drinking is causing negative consequences in their life.
  • In one study, HIV positive women receiving antiretroviral therapy who consumed alcohol moderately or heavily were more likely to have higher levels of the HIV virus, making it easier for them to spread the virus to others.
  • Men are more likely than women to commit suicide, and more likely to have been drinking prior to committing suicide.
